Website 3

A lot of people think that building a good website is the most important step toward building an organization's web presence. I'm not so sure that's true.

It's very important, believe me on that. But I think there are other steps that we took at Calvary that were more important. Of our most committed segment of the church, only 30% were aware of calvaryunited.org. Building a better invisible sight would have accomplished very little.

Once we launched, we began the work of communicating the change, and it was quite a bit of work. We had to update our search criteria so that people could easily search for us. We had to rebuild the way we did paper announcements so that the web address would be in a more prominent location. Every Sunday morning, one of our PowerPoint announcements has been the church's website address in 54-point font. Most importantly, we had to let it creep into our conversations - telling someone in a one-on-one conversation that sermon audio is online is the most effective way to make sure they utilize it.

Building it doesn't assure anything. Tell people.
